So I got to this weird stage of my life when I actually do not play any MMO at all.
It all started here with Oberin and it´s hard to even guess when. 12 years ago? Or 13, 14? Anyway it was Oberin and Planeshift at first. Then WoW, Shadowbane, Warhammer Online, Rift, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Elder Scrolls Online, EVE Online, Guild Wars 2 and I might be forgetting something else.
Oberin, tons of time spent, only MMO I built lasting friendships at. Still checking these forums on weekly basis.
Planeshift used to be a good fun, good place to role play, spent some months playing it.
WoW, well spent years playing it since Vanilla. But the latest expansion just made me silently quit (didn´t even gain a single level since it was released). The one before (WoD) was second worse and really bad too. Enough is enough.
Shadowbane was pretty good guild vs guild PvP MMO but it´s long gone.
Warhammer Online was kinda fun PvP MMO but it´s gone (had it´s flaws but I really liked it had collision detection so in PvP tank could actually tank etc.).
Rift had a great potential to be a better than WoW clone but they missed that opportunity...
Star Wars MMO was baaaad, spent like 4 hours there altogether.
Elder Scrolls MMO was horrid, bought the deluxe whatever version cause I loved Skyrim to quit the game after whole 30 minutes of gameplay.
EVE Online was pretty difficult at first, later way too much addictive and way way way too much costly (it´s a perfect example of pay to win MMO), spent months there before I have finally decided to delete all characters and my accounts (yes, accounts, you cannot play it seriously with just one account) and never look back.
Guild Wars 2 is actually somehow good. I still have it installed on my computers. Initial investment in real money to get bag space, in-game currency for crafting etc. even ain´t that bad - unless you want to buy legendaries (absolutely not necessary). Maybe few hundred Euro. Free to play model still sucks.... Would hate to not have the Euro to spent and grind my way up.... I would actually quit early on if that would be the case.
These days I actually just play single player games on Steam or Origin if I have to. I was looking at new MMOs but Black Desert Online is pay to win and has some other pretty baaad gameplay or graphic flaws. I was looking at future releases in next year or two. There is nothing interesting. No subscription only based MMO with decent lore, gameplay and engine/graphic. MMO scene seems to be dead. "Free to play" and pay to win MMOs seems to have finally done it, they have killed it!
At least some decent single player games are coming.
Does anyone have working Sheepshaver "disk image" with OS 9 and Oberin I could borrow?
I guess now would be the perfect time to toy with it again... Although I have some distant faint memories of Sheepshaver DCing etc.
SS isn't too bad anymore. I believe Rivvyre may have an image?
wish I could help, but I was never able (well... willing) to complete the install on a windows machine...
I do not have an image...
Although I have no experience with it myself, I've heard VMWare works better than SheepSaver. It's apparently more difficult to set up, on the other hand.
Regarding MMOs, I have two friends who are MMO enthusiasts. GW2 is one of the few they've played for several years. They even tried to get me to join in, but 1) I was broke 2) it wouldn't work on my archaic Macintosh computers.
I heard EVE Online is a headache to play, and more of a math equation than a regularly enjoyable game. I'm with you on your dismissal of it, though for different reasons.
And Obie...just is very well designed, mechanically (even if the graphics are horrible). I love feeling fragile, and I love feeling like I have to play with "skill" to kill medium-sized creatures on up. (With a Ranger in Rogue both in double digits, even a Giant is a pretty challenging fight.)
Only major complaint about Obie is LAG deaths, but that goes with the scrappy territory. It's still /technically/ a beta, too, so I keep that in mind.
Hope you get Obie working. Would love to have Gasby show you a Wraith, and Nial has a few crazy ideas he'd like to test out with a Druid willing to wipe a time or two.
I have the old sheep shaver with OS9 that I run Oberin on my MacBook Pro with. I believe that it is the file Ariki setup back in 2013 or so. If you have somewhere I can upload to I don't mind doing it.
Whats your computer/specs?
