Day 86 of the year 437
Shortly past midnight
Having just returned from a profitable hunt and foraging expedition in the forests around Lerilin and Brigobaen, I was dispensing items to various guild chests when I was hailed from outside the hall.
Expecting a youngling needing help or supplies, I went to the entrance and stepped outside, followed closely by my pet black bear, Urso.
There I found a man named Volund accompanied by an unnamed mercenary who called Volund "Sergeant." As they did not initially appear hostile and I had the two guild hall guards at my back as well as my pet, I stepped outside and inquired what they wanted.
Volund said he was recruiting for the mercenaries. At first I took it as a sort of joke and said that as I was the leader of the guild, I wasn't available. Vorlund said he understood that many youngsters came our way, and he wanted to advertise in the Guild Hall for recruits. He offered gold, first ten thousand, then fifteen, and finally 30.
I inquired as to what they do and who they work for (admittedly I was being a bit insulting, asking if they wanted recruits to help them prey on the innocent hard-working citizens of Oberin), and they replied that they do jobs for some of the most hard working people. I told him that if he could provide references from reputable people, I would consider discussing it with my guild mates. Volund replied that they don't disclose their clients, upon which I said "Then I can't help you."
The merc then asked the sergeant if he should "get me" and the encounter suddenly acquired hostile overtones. Volund told me he was sorry that I had disappointed him. By then a bit annoyed and angry, I replied that it was my pleasure to disappoint such as him. Volund said I should hope I didn't meet him again and made vague threats about "Next Time." Having stabled my black bear and summoned my fast, capable, and highly poisonous Lava Spider, the valiant Salsa (who took out several brigands and helped with a few Bracken yesterday), and still close to the hall's two competent guards, I was feeling confident (overconfident perhaps) and replied "Next Time!" as well.
They left to the Southwest. I followed them for a short distance but then considered the possibility of ambush by larger numbers and returned to the safety of my hall.
End of report. I submit it in the hopes that others will be wary of this "Volund" and have some idea of what he is up to and after if you should encounter him. Also, it may interest many of you to know that the mercenaries are trying to "recruit," and cause us all to consider to what end they would be recruiting.
The Druid Heike

Day 111 of the year 437
Shortly before midnight
Having just returned from my own barely-profitable hunt and foraging expedition barely dipping my red boots into the forest SouthWest of Lerilin (at which location I met 1 Pixie, 1 Fire Elemental, 1 Brown Bear, 1 Hell Hound, 1 Sludge Beast, had at least 2 Harpies, and 2 Ants, and used almost 20 potions), I dispensed items to various Guild chests and began to think about the Posting Heike had left there, among other places, as a warning.

Yes, I remember this fondly, it brought a final end to a session with the Temple Cleric whose name eludes me despite them standing still and talking for much of an Oberin day.

Wise, as especially Brigands, etc. Humans seem not to trouble the Guards to attack them
*continues talking with a new cleric at the Lerilin Docks*
Well, sorry to disappoint, but my analysis is the same as yours: they couldn't be infiltrated-sufficiently, so why bother asking Others to join, when CoF was approached, first? *Abernta pulls yellow RoP closer to self against the cold gale* |
