Octar pensively sniffs his glass of wine in the Mirith pub, remembering the time when he met Telchine in his youth. Another fort, another report to compile. His reverie is disturbed by his cousin bursting in angrily.
"Octar really I am absolutely fed up with you!"
"What have I done now Torcara.î
ìYou got lovely Mr Sheldon killed you idiot! He is such a nice man and you made him go and fight those horrid brigands.î
ìTorcara you silly girl, I didnít make him fight ñ he is brave and honourable, he would have gone into battle with or without me. Kim is his friend you know, he was hardly going to abandon her.î
ìKim? You didnít get her mixed up in all this too did you?î
ìNo! Quite the reverse, she sent a message saying she had discovered a fort filled with Brigands and Mercenaries just northwest of the rock maze. We assembled an overwhelming force and destroyed it. Look, itís a military thing ñ overwhelming force usually avoids deaths, and actually one is a lot fewer than we expect when we fight these ruffians. You wouldnít understand cousin.î
ìDonít patronize me you oaf! I know what you mean ñ but you should care for these people, they arenít just a ëforceí. I bet you donít even remember who they all were!î
ìHum well there was, err. Well, most of us Marali Vanguard: Captain Fang himself was in charge, then there was Nial, Bortles, Hideaki and Gwyddeon, me obviously. Um.. ErrmÖ Oh, Terliyneís sister KateÖ You know, we used to play a memory game at Brigobaen called ëKimís gameí funnily enough, I think I remember the techniqueÖ. So, there was Kim herself of course, and other wizards: REDMAN, I wouldnít forget him, Foxeron and Fuoco too, quite some firepower. Breigje Balloc and Buck the clerics. Tallon, Beyoglu, a new ranger called Onna, that miscreant SamÖ And Sheldon.î
ìDonít expect me to be impressed Octar, I can tell you are looking at those sketches my clever Borti made.î
ìOh - whatever Torcara. I have an important report to file, leave me be if you canít be constructive!î
ìDonít be so pouty. I just want you to be more careful, thatís all.î
Octar slurps the last drop of his wine, and muttering something inaudible slopes off to file his report.
