Hi Guys!!!!!!
Last night I signed up as a bone marrow donor at http://marrow.org/Home.aspx ... it is something I have thought about doing for since last year, when one of my best friends died of cancer in Oct 2010.
If you are over 18 and under 60, in good health, consider signing up. Apparently the ages of 20-44 are most sought as they have the best chances of not being rejected. You have about 6 pages of an online health questionnaire. Then they mail a swab set to you. You swab your cheeks for 10 seconds, and do it 4 times on 4 different swabs. Easy peasy.
They are in critical need of "minority and ethic" matches... Jewish, Asian, Native American, Hispanic, African-American, plus lots of European Ancestry types as well. If you are a Heinz 57 they especially need you as you have a potential to match even more people.
There are 2 ways to donate now. The easiest involves the donor getting 5 days of injections, self-donating a unit of blood, and then being hooked to a machine for 2-3 hours, basically like prolonged blood donation. The other way is aspiration of the back of the pelvis. You are under general for it, they send you home with happy pills, no big deal. Donating costs you nothing and all your expenses get covered.
(Edited to add: the recipient's doc decides which is the best extraction method for their patient.)
