| Anyone following this? So far we have just had a few warm-up games but it's all looking very exciting. England v Ireland this weekend, I'll probably miss this game not only because I support Wales but because I will be in a field somewhere south of London. |

Yep! Although I am not optimistic about our chances really. Ours meaning England that is, not Wales - though I will be sort of happy more-or-less-whoever wins it, having ties of one sort or another to Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France and even New Zealand. Not so much South Africa - but really just so long as it isn't Australia!
Does Fuoco support Italy? |

A third final in a row would be nice, I can't see it though, the Southern Hemisphere teams all look too good.
That being said, we have some really decent backs which can hurt any team and a really good solid second row with some more athletic players than we're sometimes accustomed to. Plus we still have ol' Wilkinson to trot out to scare the daylight out of you ozzies
Write us off at your peril, you did that four years ago and look how that turned out |

Big day tomorrow and happy to get a bit of a lay-in this weekend
I have doubts that Wales will beat France but I'm trying not to let it affect my performance.
Got to say though that SA crack me up with their petition to get rid of the ref in the game that knocked them out. Wales said nothing about the decisions made in their game against SA lol. |

I believe the man may have been lifted off his feet - just, but many good tackles come out that way. Chabal (the tackler) might have been offside as well, although not sure. Chabal retained full contact and followed through, 'helping' the downward impact. The tacklee (Chris Masoe), didn't look too great for a few seconds. Sending off? No, unless Chabal was well offside. Dangerous? You bet. It's rugby, deal with it, it's your job, especially as a back rower. Spear tackle? Absolutely not. Intentionally hurtfull? Probably. Intended to damage, maim, or put him out of the game? No, not at all.
These are the salient bits of IRB (2011) rule 10.4 (dangerous play and missconduct), as far as I can find:
(e) A player must not tackle an opponent early, late or dangerously.
(j) Lifting a player from the ground and dropping or driving that player into the ground whilst that player's feet are still off the ground such that the player's head and/or upper body come into contact with the ground is dangerous play.
10.5 (a) (forget (b), that's about repeat offences): any player who infringes any part of the Foul Play Law must be admonished, or cautioned and temporarily suspended for a period of ten minutesí playing time, or sent-off.
10.4 falls apparently under 'Foul Play Law', and I must admit, I couldn't find 'Foul Play Law' - they seem to be referring to 'dangerous paly and missconduct', which is 10.4 itself; dangerous playÖ etc. (I'm fairly sure I was on the IRB websiteÖ).
Interestingly no mention of the often quoted requirement to land said tackled player safely.
I could paste in many clips of tackles from this world cup alone that could easily be deemed to have fallen foul of the laws as quoted above and all the other laws there are in rubgy union, including many worse than that tackle. As implied above, many, many tackles in rugby, especially top-level international rugby where it is intense and physical and with very skillful, passionate, hard (and sometimes dirty) protagonists, could be illegal, as could be a lot of the ruck area. Dangerous? It's not backgammon.
Sam Warburton could be deemed to have fallen foul of 10.4 (e) or (j), in terms of either a dangerous tackle, or lifting and dropping, although very questionable. The latter is what I think referee Rolland did him for. And so, he was within his rights to show an immediate red card. However, top, experienced referee that he is, he did not consult his line judges/assistant referees (whatever you wish to call them), let alone TV upstairs (which he might not have been allowed to under the rules). Francois Pienaar's analysis (once he'd calmed down) is good, and appropriate. Rolland was probably fired up too (my opinion), and should have spent a few seconds and a quick conversation before waving the red.
Mr Warburton should not have been sent off. |
