In a thread someone mentioned that in Oberin the Fighter fills 2 of the 3 major roles that are common in most if not all MMORPG. They deal high damage and absorb damage.
What if we separated the fighter in 2 subclasses? Each with different skills and specials. Here are some quick examples of what they could be like.
The warrior, limited parry and lower RM, change prime from parry to anatomy, lower STR for less HP and raise the DEX for more damage. Also remove the defensive stances, maybe also remove challenging strike.
The guardian, lower the anatomy skill, raise RM a level or 2, lower DEX for less damage but raise STR for more HP, remove high damage specials, could add another defensive stance between the 2 we have, they could also have specials to stun, slow and add other effects to their target, like shield bash, they could also have a "field" special to attract several enemies to them like battle roar or war cry (a special lion fur helmet could raise it's effect). They could also maybe have a special shield for the last defensive stance like a tower shield. |

Well, prestige classes were proposed a while back.
If you scroll to the bottom of the first post there is some reformatting which I started doing, which got a bit tedious so I stopped, it details the berserker and paladin classes as being ramifications of the fighter class.
http://www.oberin.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=3820&start=0
Also, that thread contains things from many people, all of which I consider to be fun things that could be introduced later on to Oberin. There are some basic things that need to be fixed first (ie class balancing) before moving forwards with those ideas (except creatures which could be given some thought now...)
EDIT: Happy anniversary Oberin Ideas thread |

| Not sure there is the need to split the class. Allow fighters to equip themselves for either offense or defense. Offensively they would be much like they are now, losing defensive stances, maybe gain the ability to dual wield. Defensively, they take a larger, heavier shield, limited to a one handed weapon, and unable to use their more offensive specials. Further, protective rings could be required for defensive stances, just as rings of brute/strength are required for some attacks. |

| or the defensive stances could simply have a penalty on attack speed and/or power? (or is that too simple and boring? :P) |

Actually, I have recently been thinking about a paladin class. It would not overbalance plates nor robes, as it would be both. The paladin, being the defender of good, is a little like a fighter, in that it has quite a lot of HP. It's attack is a little less than fighters, so parry and melee would be capped at a lvl a little higher than most but not too high. It's primes would be special/paladin, healing, and magery/paladin. It is the only class able to use both magery and special, and is also the only class able to heal while having a weapon equipped. It's magery would have the lower level spells o a cleric, as well as 'lay on hands', which allows them to continuously heal the person(like a druid heals a pet:health bar becomes orange), so long as they are next to the person(no more than a square away). This ability does drain their mana, but extremely slowly. Maybe it should even have it's own skill and be able to lvl, much like healing. It's special attacks include lesser defensive stance(But not greater), smite(as explained in the thread teleco gave us), challenging strike(to stop the bad hurting the defenseless is it's motto), and a few others. Just remember, you are not allowed to use lay on hands either while fighting, or even in the presence of evil.
I guess this could be modified, but the basic idea might be nice. We just have to make sure it isn't too overbalancing in versatility. |
