Day 82, Red Moon 439
Dear Commander Vaup
I thought I should bring the following to your attention: Mercenaries were sighted on Maralian soil recently and dealt with by a crack command of Rhovanion Rebels at the Lake of the lonely tree. A curious note has been found which reads, Tell E.V. no deal! We are not sure if this relates in any way to Estess Vorund but bring it to your attention nevertheless.
With best regards
Fixx
Andris
It had all started with a pile of roots. There were plenty of them and it would take up half the night to shift them from Marali down to the lake. The seven friends met in Marali at the appointed time. Rosina and Juff were the last to turn up. Unfortunately and despite their best efforts, Marquisen, Tyler and Arduis de Gisp were absent on this occasion.
Something happened on the way as we tramped through the woods, I'm not quite sure what it was. High spirits and the camaraderie no doubt. The air smelled electric like the pleasant smell that accompanies the first rain after a dry spell.
It wasn't long before the party could begin to see the lake opening up through the trees but we weren't alone. A small fishing party it seems had beaten us to it. They didn't look like the sharing sort and a short skirmish broke out.
Now on the other side of the lake, which incidentally had muddy footprints running all around, there was a larger encampment. I don't know how many mercenaries we fought that night they just kept on coming. I tried to sneak into the camp while the chiefs were distracted by my Rebel guildmates. I think I was trying to ascertain what they might have been doing there. As luck would have it I found the note. As luck wouldn't have it, I was struck down by a bracken.
We fought tirelessly until finally we prevailed. Did I mention the green draco's? Oh, they were ferocious. A wing nearly took my arm off at one point! But that wasn't all. Call this what you will but our timing couldn't have been more unfortunate. Put it this way, if we hadn't have killed those mercenaries then the herd of migrating tuskers that followed certainly would have.
I have absolutely no idea where they were heading or why. I only know this, we were in their way. We had no choice but to stand our ground. I'm afraid they were all destroyed but the ivory will come in handy!
We eventually managed to trade those roots (bloody roots!) for some logs. I say some logs, there were around 2,300 in the end to be shared out. |
