(Scouting reports of information gathered by DG members, in their unofficial capacity as an intelligence service for Mirith.)
Day 226 of the Bleeding Moon, Year 438
Razan comes in to Dragon's Gate Hall, reeking like rum and fish. He staggers to the table and jots something down on a paper, before pushing it into an envelope. Stumbling a little, he walks into Shayde's bedroom and shakes her awake.
"Hey Shayde, I found out some information from the privateers... Can you give this to Pernell?" Razan asks, handing Shayde an envelope with a short letter inside. Opening the unsealed envelope, the rogue reads the contents.
Dear Sir Captain Casden Pernell,
On my recent fishing trip, I was attacked by a few privateers. Bloody pirates. I killed two of them and left the third alive and made him talk. He mention that Cap'n Jass has been supplying the Black Hand and that there was an attack on Mirith soon. It would probably be best if you kept this information secret, the privateers aren't the most reliable...
-Razan
"Good job, Raz!" Shayde exclaims with a grin. "I'm not going to ask what you left out here, but try not to drink too much of that rum. We can't have you drowning out there. If you need backup, I can send Euchra to help you. Let me know."
Shayde sees Serancha getting ready to go out, so hands off the letter to her. Might as well let her go chasing after Pernell. He'd no doubt be happier to see that particular ranger in the middle of the night, than a sleepy, surly rogue. With the pending attack on Mirith confirmed, she would be needing all the sleep she could get. |

Dragon's Gate Scouting Report
Day 228 of the Bleeding Moon, Year 438
On the request of a Mirith Scout, I made preparations to travel to Andris and search the surrounding islands. Rumors had come in about Privateer activity, and since the islands around Mirith were all reported secure, that meant the activity was further afield.
The only adventurer at the bank was Cassandra, and in the interest of promoting a working relationship with the Vanguard, I invited her to come along. We hunted down to the Andris bridge and checked the islands in that area. Finding them clear, we decided to take a detour and check on Temple Island in anticipation of the upcoming prayer ceremony.
When we reached the island, we found a small dock with a shelter and a crate of ferrite. Six privateers were fought and killed, and a note found, ordering the supplies to be shipped to Crescent Island. We had a brief discussion about the unusual activity that had been happening lately, and the events that were being planned in response. If I found her apparent unconcern about the impending Black Hand attack on Mirith a bit odd, I chalked it up to having too many other important matters to worry about.
When we arrived in Andris, we met up with Razan, and travelled to Crescent Island. There we found a medium sized fort filled with gapers, poison creatures, Sand Golems and some Alliance forces. I was unable to stay for the battle, but can report that a force was assembled, and the fort cleared successfully.

Dragon's Gate Scouting Report
Day 10 of the Red Moon, Year 438
Kalen, Alexia and I took the young ranger Gribtzan out with us while we went on a scouting run through the Dragon's Mouth, the Mercenary Cave, Marali Woods, and the Tree Maze forest.
We had just left Dragon's Gate hall and were heading up towards the road running between the two territories, when we noticed a large number of tracks. Camped near the tip of the rock point, near the Shoe rock formation, was a mid-sized band of mercenaries with a pair of brackens seemingly guarding their shelter. What is interesting is that they were camped where I'm told the entrance to the Centaurs' Cave is hidden. As to whether this is coincidence or not, we found no clues.
Traveling up to the Mercenary Cave, we found it empty. Too empty. We headed back out, only to be ambushed as we exited the cave. There were a dozen or so mercenaries, again with brackens and a shelter. Both this and the previous shelter had some nice items inside, but nothing unusual or noteworthy.
Dragon's Mouth cave was scouted and determined clear. Other than some slightly unusual dragon and draco activity in the tree maze, there was nothing else out of the ordinary.

Dragon's Gate Report: Unusual Activity
Day 60 of the Red Moon, Year 438
Razan, Mustafaa, Luciella, Haruko and Euchra went to the Ice Dungeon for a dragon hunt. When they entered the dragon room, they encountered a band of about fifteen mercenaries and brigands camped out.
A note was found from their leader calling for them to abort the mission due to lack of a rogue, presumably needed to open the chest containing their intended loot. The loot they were after appeared to be Ice Crystals, for they had managed to obtain one, which was found in a shelter.
This is not the first time Brigands have been sent to gather Ice Crystals, as these have always been an important item in the research being performed by the Diabolicals. The party proceeded to the dragon's lair and had a successful dragon hunt with no further encounters of the human variety. |

Day 166 of the Red Moon, Year 438
Dear Sir Casden,
I write to tell you of a troublesome occurrence. I was hunting with some friends in the Tree Maze forest, which I should point out has recently increased its population of dragons. We have also noticed a thickening in the numbers of other forest inhabitants, however, there is a notable lack of dracos, which is very odd considering the increase in adult activity. Perhaps they are all males....but it is still worth paying some attention to. I will ask our druids to keep an eye on it. Anyways, I digress.
While we were hunting, we encountered a Brigand Mage and his men camped in the maze. The Mage managed to spell a nearby dragon somehow, or else make it not notice him, for he ran right under its belly and didn't get bit. In any case, the mage was not very strong, and was a terrible coward, running off in terror as soon as we tried to close in on him. A note was found near their shelter, which said "Rebuild the old base, I'll get the papers back." The note was signed with the initial "U".
One of the Brigands was kept alive for questioning, and revealed some information before attempting to escape and having to be beheaded. The Brigand informed us that his boss, the mage, had been working for the Black Hand Wizardess, Uryste. He called her Rem's woman, whether this meant underling, mistress, or both was unclear. He would not answer when asked what base was being rebuilt or what kind of work the mage did for the woman, but went on and on about her wickedness, shaking in fear, and at one point wetting himself in terror. Finally the coward was just too scared to talk any more and ran in the direction the Mage had taken.
A little while later, our party went to leave the maze, and our wizard found a body. Not even thinking to check for traps, he leaned over to examine the corpse and was assailed by a large magical explosion. He was left lying on the ground panting, not quite dead. A whisper hung in the air over the corpse, clearly audible to any who stepped near "Don't run darling, it gives us a bad reputation." When I heard this I was glad that the coward had paid for his lack of spine, and almost respected this Uryste woman, for that moment.
However, the papers referred to in the note are almost certainly those taken from the Black Asylum - the Diabolical hideout that was raided recently. I am aware that Mirith holds them, but don't know whether it is the Vanguard or the castle. Whoever does hold them should be prepared for an attack. We tried to discover where the "old base" they are rebuilding might be located, but were unable to get that information. Might this be the old hideout you mentioned to my sister? Any information on where we might look would be of help, if we are to get to them before they get to us.
Dragon's Gate remains at your service.
Yours,
Lady Serancha

*A copy of this scouting report is delivered to Ordo Chao hall, by a messenger in Dragon's Gate livery*
Dragon's Gate Scouting Report
Day 196 of the Red Moon, Year 438
After getting a hot tip from Marlick about a surplus of treasure bags currently being found in the forest, I headed out to see for myself. The tip was correct, and soon my pack was bulging more than it ever had, even at the fullest of Lucky Moons.
Not knowing what had caused this windfall, and not wasting any time wondering, I jogged through the forest scanning the ground. Stopping in at Ordo Chao hall, I discovered Sher was not at home, so I continued on my way. Ignoring my normal precautions, I headed off, not paying attention to anything but my eager search for the next treasure. After all, this was practically the safest forest in the land, populated by only dogs and wolves. And so I just about got myself killed, by blindly running full tilt into a camp of ten forest trolls and a gaper.
Thankfully only four of them saw me before I managed a hasty retreat, but I got close enough to see that there were a pair of shelters as well. There was no time to think or send for help - I was on my own now. I managed to make two of them yield and run, but the other two closed in on me and I took a terrible blow to the head. For a few minutes all I could see were rainbows swirling around in my eyes, but when I managed to clear my head, I was thankfully still in the land of the living. I pulled myself back together and sent the second pair to their graves.
That blow to the head must have really disoriented me, for it took some time for me to find the camp again. When I did, the rest of the Forest Trolls and the Gaper were still hanging out there. Some fancy luring, a quick dance with the gaper, and all were dead or fled. The shelters contained a wide assortment of broad swords and some gold. After taking down the camp, I alerted the Guards at Ordo Chao to keep their eyes out, and then hunted down the remaining Forest Trolls.
There was no sign as to their purpose, but it appeared that they had been there for some time, and had just not been discovered. No notes, chests, or Black Hand paraphernalia was found, so my guess is that it was just a normal bunch of forest trolls getting together to cause trouble. The gaper was likely incidental. The main concern to me was their camp's close proximity to Ordo Chao's hall.

Dear Serancha,
I have just received a copy of your scouting report, that our buffoon of a guard forwarded on to us. It appears that he went on some stop-work strike soon after your messenger delivered the report.
It's very strange that you found two shelters so close to the Hall, I can't imagine why they erected them in our part of the forest. Since we have been on vacation it seems they took advantage of none of us being around and going undetected for a while. It also looks like the Forest Troll population has sky rocketed over the last few moons. Once we return we shall once again cull the local population.
On a brighter note, the sun is shinning here, the water is crystal blue and it is going to be hard to leave this island paradise and get back to Hall duties.
Thank you and your team for your ever vigil efforts in our absence.

Dragon's Gate Report: So much green.
Finding themselves bored in Mirith, Serancha and Kalen set off to do what Rangers do best. Scouting out and past the Wall of Trees, they stumbled upon Lou Bene who then decided to join them. As they ventured further, they suddenly realised they had been surrounded by a large tribe of Trolls lead by a Troll Chief! This Chief had been particularly interested in Lou. The group engaged the Trolls and the denizens of the area in a fierce battle. After eliminating the Chief, the remaining demoralised Trolls had scattered. With the group suffering a tragic loss in Serancha, Lou left to summon Punit Bene to restore and support the rangers as they continued their journey.
After a while they noticed that the creature density was far greater than normal, even when considering the area in question. All manner of creatures, predominately green beasts, began charging at them relentlessly. Enduring the arduous skirmish, the trio eventually discovered what had lured the peculiar menagerie. They were attracted to a cache of three Green Robes of Resistance!
It was at that point that tragedy struck, the onslaught was too much for Kalen and Punit and they fell. Fortuitously, a Healer from Marali happened by, escorted by three Marali Guards. After gratefully thanking the Healer for her aid, the group made their way to Marali, bruised, battered and weary. |

Scouting Report: Tree Maze Troubles
Full Harvest Moon, Year 438
A wide trail of blood was found coming out of the Tree Maze. At it's end was the intensely mauled corpse of a woman. The maze itself was filled with dracos in numbers rarely seen before, as well as a goodly number of brackens. A party consisting of Kelan, Siradar, Gohbo, Gorden and myself first cleared the forest around the maze, checking for signs of other human activity. Finding none, we proceeded into the maze, then joined by Gribtzan. Fighting our way though the maze packed with dracos and brackens, we made slow but steady progress.
Reaching the center of the maze, we found more of the same, and a resident dragon. After dispatching the beasts, we discovered a pair of brackens right atop the ladder to the Mari Rangers dungeon. After killing them, we went inside and discovered a flock of dracos waiting at the entrance. After killing these, I scouted further in and found dragons roaming the halls outside the lair.
By this time my armor was unable to give enough protection against dragon bites, so the party departed with the plan to come back with reinforcements.
A few days later another party entered the dungeon. This party included Mustafaa, Skaggz, Euchra and Jedd. They were later joined by Gohbo. They found several dragons roaming the dungeon, one in each room, and a couple that came sneaking up on the group from the back hallways. They discovered an extra chest in the West room being guarded by yet another dragon, and in it was a Mace of Speed and assorted robes.
There was no sign of the reason for this unusual activity, or who the mauled body outside the maze may once have been.

Day 86 of the Dancing Moon, Year 438
Sir Casden,
A party ventured to the Ice Dungeon for a Dragon hunt. On the heels of Vandrovic's release from enchantment, it appears he has wasted no time in beginning the resurgence of the "Ice Flight". There was a considerable increase in dragon activity, as well as an apparent thickening of creatures guarding the entrance of the dungeon.
Not long after the party arrived at their usual hunting spot and noted a great increase in the number of Dragons and Golems in the Lair area, magical runes mysteriously appeared, sealing these creatures away from the adventurers. It would seem that Vandrovic does not want his troops disturbed until he is ready to unleash them. Either that or some other force was at work, but logic points to the first theory.
Once it became apparent that their planned hunt could not be continued, the party began to retrace their steps back out of the dungeon. They were repeatedly assaulted by pairs of dragons, and sometimes a third would arrive before the first was quite dead. It was not overwhelming for the group, but was a clear foreshadowing of dark times to come.
We advise you to have Mirith to prepare herself and her outlying towns, especially Duldrus, for attack from the Ice Lands. This dragon will not waste any time attacking, once he has gathered enough forces, and those forces are being gathered at an astonishing rate.
Regards,
Razan and Euchra of Dragon's Gate |

After finally sailing back to Mirith for repairs and to dump all his fish, Razan then sailed to the Ice Dungeon to meet up with friends and enjoy a good hunt. There, he was brought up to speed with current events, including the return of Vandrovic. With much interest in the topic, after the hunt Razan decided he should head to Duldrus to make sure everything was well. He didn't want Duldrus to be revived just to be torn to shreds again by the same dragon. Razan entered Duldrus and was greeted by the usual harpies and gapers. He easily killed them and headed to the forge for repairs. At the forge, Wilem greeted him and they talked.
Wilem: : Hello.
Razan: : Hello
Razan: : How's it goin'?
Wilem: : Oh seems quiet.
Razan: : Oh?
Wilem: : The usual gapers, harpies.
Razan: : *nods*
Razan: : I ran into them on my way in
Wilem: : One out by the window.
Razan: : I see, hehe
Razan: : There was a bit of unusual activity in the Ice Dungeon today...
Razan: : Do you any thing about that?
Wilem: : Oh?
Wilem: : I heard nothing.
Razan: : Aha..
Razan: : There was magic runes... And an extraordinary amount of dragons and golems...
Razan: : In the lair..
Wilem: : Oh, well so long as they stay there.
Razan: : Mhm
Razan: : I heard Vandrovic is back...
Wilem: : *looks frightened*
Wilem: : Really?
Razan: : Yeah.
Wilem: : That's very bad news.
Razan: : *nods*
Razan: : I came here to make sure Duldrus was still in good shape...
Wilem: : I hope some more guards are posted up here
Razan: : I'd hate to see the town destroyed again, after the all the work we put in repairing it
Razan: : More guards would be good.
Wilem: : Yes, I'm glad you are around.
Razan: : *smiles*
Razan: : I can send in a request to Mirith for more guards
Wilem: : Some more guards would sure make us feel safer.
Razan: : I bet
Wilem: : I'd better get back to work.
Razan: :
Razan: : Nice talking to you
Wilem: : See ya.
Razan: : Stay safe
Razan then made his way back to Mirith and wrote up a letter addressed to Sir Casden.
Dear Casden,
It has come to my attention that the people of Duldrus are very frightened by the fact that Vandrovic has returned. After talking to Wilem, the blacksmith, we have come to an agreement that Duldrus should be granted a few well trained guards to watch over the town. It would make the citizens feel much safer and would be greatly appreciated. On behalf of Mirith and Dragon's Gate, I would like to request that you send a few guards to Duldrus. We have just repaired and repopulated the isolated town and it would be a shame to see it back it ruins from the same cause as before.
Best regards,
Lord Razan of Dragon's Gate
Razan folds up the letter and tucks it into an envelope, sealed and stamped with the Dragon's Gate emblem. He chugs a glass of sheep's milk to hide the stench of rum from his breath and tries to sober up before walking up to the castle and handing the letter to Mattias. |

Day 150 of the Lucky Moon, Year 438
Dear Sir Casden,
I hope this finds you well. I am writing to inform you of a matter of some concern. Several reliable sources have come to me with this same tale over the past moon, and when the same information comes in from multiple sources, it is almost always true.
Since the return of Vandrovic, there have been several incidents in the Rock Maze next to Mirith, of attacks from Dragons and/or Ice Creatures. This was expected, but what is troublesome is that those who were present at the encounters not only did not report these attacks, but have gone out of their way to keep them a secret. They have apparently made a pact not to discuss the incidents in front of any other adventurers, going and hiding in dark corners and in the back of the noisy pub to discuss it instead.
Apparently, after a recent incident involving a Forest Dragon, they ran off immediately for yet another of these clandestine meetings, and again, no report was made of a violent attack within spitting distance of our city gates. I have not personally been at any of these incidents, but as you know, my network of - information - is wide and reliable.
The speculation is that this group is going to attempt to enter an alliance with the dragons - possibly Vandrovic himself - but for what purpose is unclear. The fact that they have purposely withheld the information of attacks so close to the city gives very grim prospects for their intent. If you wish me to discover their plans, I'm sure a few gentle questions could discover what is necessary. I will await your instructions on the matter.
On another note, I can now give first hand testimony that Varsha and Rasha are again walking our lands. I stood face to face with them today, and managed to stab Rasha twice in the back. Unfortunately his sister then took her axe to my head, but it was worth it for what I learned about the legendary Twins this day. I am attaching a copy of Sam's report of this incident for your records, since he is unable to deliver it to Mirith himself.
I must strongly emphasize the point in this report, that the Twins now have rings that replicate a black magic teleportation spell. They used it to send the Hermit and then themselves directly from the Hermit's shack to an unknown location, just as if they had been summoned by a Black Mage. Please pass this information on to Beleth as soon as possible, as he may need to figure out how to protect against this new threat.
Regards,
Lady Shayde

Day 219 of the Lucky Moon, Year 438
Skaggz, Larzz and I went to the Ice Dungeon, originally intending to hunt dragons with Razan. Unfortunately Razan got a hole in his raft, and was unable to make it to the island, so the three of us ended up hunting dracos instead.
When the draco hall was almost cleared, Skaggz went down the side to pilfer the chests, and heard the unmistakeable sounds of a dragon on the other side of the wall. Dancing with excitement, he ran back and pulled me into the draco hall to hear the sounds for myself. "We have to go in!" the rogue exclaimed.
The three of us then proceeded into the maze in search of the dragon. Recalling that it was this very spot where Vandrovic was first met, I cast protective spells on my companions and hoped for the best. Thankfully it was a normal everyday Ice Dragon, and the beast was dispatched with not too much difficulty.
When we reached the place where the dragon had been loitering, we discovered a web covered chest. Many frost spiders came crawling out of the walls when we approached it, and after slaying them, Skaggz unlocked it. He was unable to disarm the trap, so Larzz took the explosion and emptied the chest which contained a single Ice Crystal.
When we left the dungeon, we were astonished to find the island surrounded by a sea boiling with sharks. A brief but fierce battle took place to clear the sea so we might step off the island, and even then, when I went to paddle home I was almost eaten alive by more sharks further off shore. It seems Vandrovic is going to some effort to protect the army he is building.

Day 14 of the Blue Moon, Year 438
Dear Casden,
I hope this finds you well. Although we have been unable to find any sign of the Twins or clues as to where they have absconded with the Hermit of Lerilin Lake, I do have a note of passing interest.
Dragon's Gate rangers have come across two bands of brigands in the past several days, camping in the exact same spot on the North shore of Marali Lake. Neither band had any possessions even worth looting (although the chocolate was tasty). Kalen and I came across the first band as we encountered Dino, Daystra and another ranger (with an unusual name that I can't spell) some days ago.
The second band which we found this day (the 14th) seemed to have a literate member in it, as Kalen, Rinaldo, Alec and I found scraps of his logs, but again with no information. However the repeated use of a campsite that has been previously raided may mean the Alliance has some interest in the area. We have noticed an abundance of trolls that have moved into the area below the lake also.
Warm regards,
Serancha |

Day 180 of the Blue Moon, Year 438
The Final Farewell of Casden Pernell
She laid a blue rose on the surface of the ocean off the docks of Duldrus. It was a marker, if a very temporary one, of the place she had laid her Knight to rest in the gentle waves of the sea. She would not risk burying him, for Tirana had said that death was her toy, and Serancha highly doubted that causing it was her only ability in that area.
Stepping back, she raised her head and looked at those gathered around. Mikomi, Luciella, Kelan, REDMAN, Ivitus, Leha and Fulhal stood as an honor guard for the Knight of Mirith.
"Here lies a brave knight," she began. With an attempt at a smile she added, "and a very dashing man."
Wanting to keep it brief, as tears were threatening, she returned to the traditional funeral rites. "He died for his King and a noble cause. He shall be remembered as a true, loyal, and honorable soul. This rose marks the passing of Captan Sir Casden Pernell. May he rest in peace."
The group made their farewells, and drifted apart, leaving Sera on the pier alone. Some time later she roused herself and noticed the guards had started to arrive. Wandering into the town, she heard voices echoing against the rocks, and it turned out they were coming from an open window at the Inn. Mirith's Vanguard had arrived, and the Inn had been turned into a temporary bank. Sera went in, although she didn't feel like talking to anyone yet, but she also knew she wasn't in any shape to travel.
The people inside were talking about how the guards escaped the city, and reminiscing about Mernias for a bit. Serancha remained quiet, sorting through her bank and checking her supplies. But when the Guard brought up Casden, she felt the tears well up, and knew she couldn't stay to make a fool of herself. Muttering something about her armor, she fled. Somehow she ended up at the restaurant and bought some food, but couldn't eat it.
She was staring at her plate when the staff started exclaiming about seeing something unusual out the window. Making an excuse about something in her eye, she asked what they had seen. They said it looked like a ghost. Sighing about some refugee getting bolted by a gaper, she dragged herself off the bench, deciding she better go help the poor soul. This wasn't the best town for inexperienced adventurers.
Leaving the restaurant, she had to shoot down a couple of gapers, and couldn't see any sign of a ghost, so stopped in to fix her plate. Leaving the forge she headed back to the North side of town, figuring the ghost would be heading for the Hall temple. When she found a guard, she asked him if he'd seen anything, and he reported having an odd feeling in his bones, but couldn't describe it. Wonderful.
As she turned away, exasperated, she caught a glimpse of a ghost in the distance, headed towards the docks. One that looked..... Gasping, Serancha broke into a run. She had to get to him! Her boots pounded as she ran full tilt onto the pier. She skidded to a stop just before she ran right into the water, and yet was barely in time. His ghost needed to reach is body before he could rest, and had now accomplished that task. Something was wrong though. This ghost was not at peace.
The poor spirit reached out an arm as if to touch Serancha, and said "I.. I'm sorry."
Serancha reached out, but the breeze picked up just then, and he was gone. As she slumped down on the dock, a wail of despair rang through the air that sounded like "I'm sorry".
She should have told him she loved him. She should have been brave enough. "I wouldn't have cared. We all do what we have to do..." She told the air, hoping he was out there somewhere still. He must have thought she wouldn't understand about Tirana, but how could she not? He was a young, virile man who had dedicated his life to serving the king. She was of the royal blood and beautiful. Horrible and vile, but not hard to look at. And to help provide a royal heir? It would have been an honor for any young man in service.
She sighed sadly and opened her pack. Her eyes widened with surprise, then she remembered. She had tossed his personal effects in there before picking up his body, since she needed all her strength to hold him. There wasn't much - his bow and his prized glaive - both good quality and showing signs of use. It was nice to see he had spent a good amount of time in the field himself. His robe had been charred up too.
She took the last item in her hands, and the tears came. His ring. She had wanted a wedding ring from this man for so many moons, and he was too determined to do his duty to make time. Now he'd never get the chance. She slid it over her finger. It was far too big, of course, but it was his and holding that piece of him warmed her heart.
Casden's next of kin would be N'eroth, making these items rightfully his. She would lock the weapons in a chest until he was of age, then present them to him so he could have something of his real father. The ring she would offer as well, of course, but until then she would treasure it as a reminder of the man she had loved. |
