Blood. The moon, previously just blemished with it, was now bursting with it. It was the first day of that cycle known as the Bleeding Moon. To some, it threatened. To others, it beckoned. Nonetheless, the happenings on that day would be seen as a harbinger of the new moon.
Jedd emerged from the library of the Mirith castle, having spent most of the night poring over old manuscripts and documents. Despite the exhausting nature of his historical venture, he felt refreshed as he moseyed on through the castle. Once outside, he noticed a dim red light illuminating his surroundings. Thank the heavens, it wasnít the Rift, but instead the new Bleeding Moon. He smiled nervously to himself and walked to the bank as the sun rose, overpowering the moonís light.
There he spent some time chatting absentmindedly with the crowd, when he heard a voice cry out in distress. It seemed that some scouts had reported a strange structure to the north of the city.
Jedd gathered up his belongings as quickly as he could before setting off to the north with Mustafaa. The two fighters in their light blue boots soon ran into Cassandra, Skaggz, and what appeared to be the tracks of many different creatures. They followed the tracks and before long a wooden structure was sighted in the horizon.
The cleric Euchra met up with them at the fortification and they proceeded to inspect the area. The building turned out to be quite small, and at the southern face there were three large bonfires that blocked the only entrance. Peering over the fires, Jedd could see that it was jam packed with many Lava Spiders, Hell Hounds and Rust Beasts.
Warily keeping an eye on the Rust Beasts, Jedd dug through his pack for a full minute, finally coming to the conclusion that he had forgotten his Robe of Protection. Cassandra charitably lent him one of hers and he removed his metal equipment. It was agreed that Jedd would try to take care of the Rust Beasts while the plated Skaggz and Mustafaa would avoid them.
The fires soon burnt themselves out and the red creatures quickly filled the vacant spots. Things were going well and the enemy forces were being contained, until the threat of the Rust Beasts created holes in the humansí defensive line. Jedd and his four fellow warriors were pushed back.
The following battle was very hectic and chaotic, but everyone worked together very well. Cassandra paralyzed foe after foe and Euchra kept everyone alive, even while both of them were under attack. Eventually it became too dangerous to wear plate as more and more Rust Beasts poured out of the structure, and Mustafaa and Skaggz switched to their protective robes.
The battle was won before the sun began to set. Jedd ran around the perimeter to deal with any remaining creatures and then joined everyone inside the fort itself. Skaggz found a chest at the far end and successfully picked the lock, but he couldnít remove the trap that he had detected. The mighty Mustafaa took the explosion, which did quite a lot of damage. Jedd wasnít so sure that he couldíve survived it.
The spoils consisted of various weapons and armor, including a nice-looking Stave of Speed that Jedd managed to win. The five exchanged cordialities and went their separate ways.
Jedd walked back to town at his typical slow pace. The bloody moon once again rose in the sky as nightfall descended upon him. There had been much speculation throughout the dayís events. Did it signify the return of the Blood Cult? Jedd could only hope not.
ìMay the moon bleed a lot more for you,î Cassandra had said as she departed the scene of battle.
Jedd reflected on her words and smiled. It was going to be quite the Bleeding Moon. |

Day 6 of the Bleeding Moon, Andris
Nobody likes to be awoken from a nap under a cosy tree for nothing and I was ready to give Rosina a piece of my mind when she came, bow in hand, shaking my shoulder and tugging at my robe - "Wake up Fuoco! Please come and see what is happening... I am alone and there is blood on the sand. I saw a Rust Beast and shot it down". I rubbed my eyes and rose to my feet, looking earnestly at the girl. The expression of concern in her countenance seemed genuine, so I followed her to the beach.
Here I could see that the girl had not lied - the body of the beast, already covered in flies, marred the immaculate sand. I followed the trail of blood and it led me to Lava Spiders and Hell Hounds. Good Heavens! Is it the Lady Moon who is causing them to bleed? And how did these creatures of the Volcano get here? Did they find the secret underwater passage that links the two continents?
After killing the intruders, I proceeded in an easterly direction, guided by the blood stains, and found a Lava Spider guarding a chest. This I found to contain some gold, a piece of Gohoran chocolate and a red robe of resistance against magic attacks. I stored the booty in my sack, wondering who the chest had belonged to, and after satisfying myself that the area was now restored to its proper order I made my way to the city. |

Day 71 of the Bleeding Moon, Lerilin
"Feeling stalked?" I turned my eyes towards Mirrim as she approached along the path. "No, I am feeling bandaged" , was my laconic reply whilst I carried on with the job at hand. I could have had my bit of fun, I suppose, and answered "Yes, I am", then left just enough time before she could manifest her reaction and continued, somewhere along the lines of, "but that I would classify as some status symbol - not everybody enjoys the privilege of being stalked by Heike's younger sister!".
My thoughts of playing some trick on Mirrim were diverted by an impudent skeleton, who said he could do with some bandages too... "Then I could become a mummy!" it added. "And I could become a daddy!" I retorted. My fellow cleric proceeded to attack bony-face and the skeleton ran off. "Come back here!", Mirrim shouted and went after it. This business ended up with a heap of bones on the ground. Pretty much the same end as another cheeky mass of bones, who had told me, just a day earlier, he had a cavity and, before I could think something really bad, hastened to add "You know, tooth decay!". It turned up that he had been eating candy!
We got closer to the cemetery entrance on official cleric business and had just begun our warming up session when fellow Rebel Zico approached and asked if he could join the punching club. He was graciously admitted as a temporary member, his Brown Bear standing at a discreet distance, probably watching the scene with a considerable dose of doubt about our fighting techniques.
Some form of evil suddenly took shape. The undead were rising at an alarming rate, No sooner had Mirrim and I brought an army of skeletons down, than another would take its place, and another. "Leave now and I might spare you", an arrogant voice thundered. Too late, too late I saw the atrocity being committed - Zico's bear had appeared seemingly out of nowhere, taking the full brunt of the Mage's anger. Now the dead pet's body lay on the grass - a soft, warm shape in stark contrast to the enormous pile of hard white bones. We had our revenge though - I took my bow out whilst Zico summoned living tornados, and the evil lord of the cemetery followed the fate of its minions.
I urged my companions to retreat as we needed to replenish our supplies of potions but something rather alarming happened while we were thus engaged. The grass around us was reddened by blood, and we could not understand whence it came. We looked at each other, then I looked at my badly torn and tattered robe. "I need to make myself some leather armour", I said, "I cannot face a battle like this!". A cleric changing area was thus set up and a Do Not Disturb sign duly erected. Working as swiftly as I could, I got myself equipped with sturdier garments. "What do you suppose she is changing into?", Mirrim asked Zico. Thankfully for them, I did not turn into some Brigand Cleric!
We rushed to the cemetery gate to find mayhem - Lava Spiders, Giant Bats, Hell Hounds and Rust Beasts formed our welcome committee, in addition to the local residents. The druid's quick thinking turned a foe into an ally - one of the Lava Spiders was now fighting alongside us. Zombies were now pouring forth and it was after seeing Mirrim cursed by one that I took charge of the operations and I am afraid to say I started acting like a dictator. "Mirrim, stay away from them! Zico, provoke the enemy. Zico keep that spider out of the cemetery! Zico look after Mirrim!" In my turn, I was busy fighting with magic, fists and bow. Blinded by rage when I heard a Bone Mage's mocking voice say "Dance spider, dance!" and determined that he should not have another victim to his credit, I resorted to my ultimate weapon - "* Bol Shoo! *", thundered my magic ring again and again. Mirrim and Zico echoed me - the younger cleric with her turn undead spell and the druid with tornados.
Mirrim showed extraordinary courage - with no robe to protect herself against the Mage's attacks, and often on the brink of death, she managed to pull through time and time again and bravely stand its vicious attacks. I really do not know how many of the vile Bone Mages we fought, the stream seemed endless. At one stage we managed to break through and position ourselves within the burial grounds, where we could see a couple of Brackens in the distance, against the north-eastern perimeter, but Giant Bats, Bone Mages and Zombies obliged us to retreat time and time again. When the avalanche of attackers subsided a little, Zico released his temporary ally into the wild and ran to get his more trusted Oshikuru from the stable. I protected the Lava Spider against magic attacks and we entered the cemetery once again. I said to my companions "Let me go first and attract the attention of the evil trees, then you attack one". No sooner had we carried our plan out, than a last evil mage appeared. "Out, fast!" I shouted. Thankfully, Zico and Mirrim snapped immediately into action and, after killing the villain, we returned to the trees. Oshikuru made a tasty meals of them and then our eyes focused on a chest the Brackens had been guarding.
Well, who is going to check it? The question lingered in the air. We all feared a trap. With a sigh, and unwilling to risk my companions' lives, I cast a protective spell on myself and kicked open the lid of the trunk. The explosion caused considerable damage but nothing my magic could not cure, and now we could take possession of the treasures it contained - gold and two beautifully tailored magic robes. The two clerics and the druid, needless to say, took a much needed rest after sharing the spoils of the battle.
If I could, I would give a shiny medal of valour to Mirrim - she truly performed feats of courage throughout the ordeal. It is to be hoped that one day she will overcome this weakness of hers - claustrophobia - thus placing herself really and truly amongst the great clerics of our lands! |
