((This one is loooong. If you don't like it then leave. This RTQ was way too fun for a short report!))
Day 84 of the Growing Moon, Year 438
It was in the very early hours of the morning as the fighter dozed off in the warmth of the bank building of Mirith. The cold stone was not particularly comfortable, but it was free and the guards didnít seem to mind. His sleep was interrupted as a small messenger boy shook him awake. Before the fighter could grasp his surroundings, the boy ran off, leaving a small note behind. The fighter rubbed the sleep from his eyes and slowly read the paper. It was from Taylor.
Moments later, Jedd was wide-awake, running for the west gate of town as he donned his armor. He ran through the angry crowds of Brown Bears and Gooeys who didnít care to have their homes invaded, and finally arrived at the Arctic Legion Island, where the note said to come.
There he happened upon a most intriguing scene. Sobiya, Taylor, Eliposin stood one end of the island, and a crowd of Privateers stood at the other. Razan stood in the middle, with an enthusiastic grin on his face.
ìIíll accept your offer, Capín Jass,î Razan announced, much to the surprise of Jedd and the others. Apparently, this Captain Jass was attempting to recruit some able-bodied warriorsÖand it looked as if he was successful.
ìIíll see ye aboard ship then!î the captain replied, rafting off to the south with his fellow seadogs behind him. Razan went off to follow him, despite the concern and threats of his ex-fellow adventurers. To Jedd, the whole thing was clearly a trap. They agreed that they should try to talk Razan into his senses, and set off to hunt him down.
Over an hour was spent in pursuit of the renegade fighter. Finally, Jedd and his friends found themselves nearing the city of Andris. They decided to stop by the hall of the Andris Vanguard and see if the guards had any news of privateers. They had none, but they did suggest checking out the Dojo, the privateer base. Jedd peered into his orb, noticing that Razan was still a ways to the east.
Jedd suggested that they hurry to the Dojo, before Razan came to the same conclusion as they just did. The journey was, for the most part, unexciting. However, as the Dojo became sighted, the waters churned and frothed. An enormous wave of Sharks surfaced and attacked the four, and they were forced to separate and flee for their lives.
Jedd had visited the Dojo only a few days before, and knew of the planks that surrounded the fortress. He paddled furiously towards the Dojo and landed on the planks, away from the bite of all the sharks and the few wandering Sea Serpents.
Jedd chugged a few potions and looked around. Razan himself was further down the planks. A few Privateers were attacking him, seeming not to know of Razanís attempt to join their ranks.
ìWhere could Jass beÖDrop ye weapons!î Razan yelled at the Privateers in a remarkably convincing accent.
ìGive it up, Razan. This is a trap!î Jedd hollered out loud, attracting the attention of the Privateers and allowing Razan to continue down the planks.
Jedd entered into his defensive stance and sent the Privateers running after a quick tussle. Fortunately for them, the Sharks had calmed down and werenít interested in the blood of the Privateers. Jedd furiously sprinted down the planks as he attempted to make up the ground he had lost to Razan.
ìWhere be ye capín?î Razan questioned another small band of the pirates. They had no answer. As Jedd neared, Razan downed a potion that hid him from view. Subsequently, the Privateers again attacked Jedd as Razan continued his search.
The battle ended in favor of Jedd but it had been enough to count ñ Jedd had lost track of Razan. Jedd rounded the southernmost end of the Dojo and prepared to continue chasing, when he heard a yell from inside.
ìHey!î Taylorís muffled yell reached Jeddís ears through the walls. ìLet me out now!î
It seemed that the pirate scum had kidnapped Taylor. Jedd heard loud rattling noises from inside amidst the yelling, deducing that Taylor was locked up in some kind of metal cage. Jedd tried to yell through the walls, but in vain. Suddenly a cacophonous racket came from the inside: the blasted Privateers were singing some bawdy song!
Jedd decided to find the entrance and investigate the situation, when more noises came from inside. Jedd heard makings of a brief struggle, followed by a yell and a slam of a gate. From the sound of it, Sobiya too had been captured. Things werenít looking good for Jedd. The only other one left on his side was Eliposin, and she was far away.
Before Jedd could make a decision on his course of action, he heard Razan let out a loud Yarr! Jedd ran over to the source of the noise, only to see Razan engaged in combat with a couple of more Privateers. They still refused to lay down their arms. Razan dispatched of the pirates with ease, when a Sea Serpent arrived, presumably to make a crunchy snack of the scoundrel.
Jedd still harbored great hatred for the serpents, and still believed that Razan was out of his senses, so he assited in slaying the beast. Finally, from inside the Dojo, Captain Jassís voice was heard.
ìWhoís that scurvy land lubber outside?î the strong voice carried.
ìHe wants us to heal his men!î Sobiya yelled from her prison. ìOr have us walk the plank!î
ìIíll kill em both!î Jass roared.
ìDo it!î Razan encouraged him. ìIím her to join you. Call off your men, and I will enter.î
ìWeíll see if ye be man enoughÖî Jass yelled back as Razan ran towards the entrance. Jedd attempted to follow, but when he reached the entrance it was too dangerous to enter. Instead, he continued to circle the Dojo, stopping when he heard the sound of battling inside.
From the sound of the voices, it seemed that Jass was testing Razanís meddle. The skirmish soon ended with Jass letting out a hearty bellow. It seemed that Razan had fallen. Now Jedd truly was the last one left. He turned to move away, only to trip on a barrel and fall face first into the sea. Before he could catch himself, a heavy wooden object cracked over his skull. He had been knocked out!
Time passed. Jedd was drifting through a strange empty space, with stars floating all around him. Was this the real life? Was it just fantasy?
Jedd came to in the central hallway of the Dojo. He quickly glanced around. Razanís ghost lingered nearby and the Captain stood in front of him. He could hear yelling and throttling of a cage behind him.
ìHahaha!î Jass thundered. ìNow ye can fight me! I be wanting to test them healers.î
And test them he did. Sobiya and Taylor were released and brought to Jedd. They proceeded to resurrect Razan.
ìAre ye ready me lad?î Jass asked.
ìI should hope so.î Jedd coldly responded as he entered into his defensive stance.
Jass descended upon Jedd and the duel began. It dragged on for minutes, with Jedd being constantly healed by his friends and Jass barely taking any damage.
ìAllow me to kill him!î Razanís menacing voice cut in.
ìRazan, you could end this madness!î Jedd frantically yelled, seeing that Razan would turn the tide of battle for either side that he joined. In all his bravado, Jass claimed that he could take both of the fighters, but Razan again expressed his disinterest in opposing the captain. Finally, Jass retreated, admitting that the healers were indeed sufficient. Jedd advanced deeper into the fort, not willing to let Jass flee. The captain attempted to coax the clerics into joining his side, but they were too scrupulous for such an affiliation. In the meantime, Razan was distracted by a couple of Gapers who decided to have fun with him.
ìUnfortunately for you, Jass, the one who would support you is no cleric!î Jedd pointed out to Jass.
ìAye he be a landlubber!î Jassís ambitions were made clear. He didnít want Razan on his side after all.
Jass then took a swing at Razan, who finally decided to fight the captain. Jass saw that the odds were no longer in his favor, so he decided to call his men. As Razan pointed out, the men were weak. The battle raged on, before Jass eventually opted to ask if Razan would like to join him. He fervently agreed.
ìRight then. Letís see ye fight!î Jass instructed. Horrified, Jedd witnessed Razan cut Taylor to the ground with his glaive. The defected fighter then turned on Sobiya, who tried her best to flee, but to no avail. Jass was upset at the loss of the good healers, but it was unlikely that the clerics would have helped Jass either way.
Razan and his new Privateer allies then came for Jedd, who was now without support. It was inevitable: Jedd was going to die. But he wouldnít go without a fight! Jedd hacked away, using the healing ring on his left hand to keep him alive and extend the battle. For reasons still unknown to Jedd, Captain Jass fell to the gray world. Perhaps Jass attempted to gain revenge on Razan for killing the clerics, but failed in his attempt.
Before long, however, the ring broke. Razanís glaive cut Jedd closer and closer to death with each swing. As Jedd saw the gray approaching, he lifted his ringed right hand and sent forth two immense bolts of lightning towards Razan. The massive amount of energy temporarily blinded Jedd and his ring shattered.
The next thing he knew, all was gray. He was now a pale ghost. But so was Razan. Miraculously, Jedd had managed to bring Razan down with him. Five ghosts sat in the room.
ìHow the devil?î Jassís ghost wailed. Indeed, everyone was in shock. ìMen! Get me a cleric!î
Unfortunately, Jassís men were still alive. They left and momentarily returned with a weak-looking cleric. Weak as he was, he was wearing a very rare magical ring that allowed him to resurrect his Captain. Razan attempted to get himself resurrected, but Jass was still mad about the death of ëhisí clerics.
Some time passed with the four in the gray world. The resurrected Jass seemed to be preoccupied with something. Mustafaa, Dharma, Varto, Pirro and Eliposin burst onto the scene. Eliposin had come through! They quickly resurrected the fallen ones and immediately attacked Jass. The weak cleric soon fled, leaving Jass without a healer.
A battle of a much larger scale then took place. Razan remained a ghost, as the new arrivals were instructed of his treachery. Finally, seeing that he was outnumbered, Jass fled the vicinity and sailed off into the ocean. Everyone chased after him, but the sea was still filled with hoards of sharks, making pursuit impossible.
The battle had been won, more or less. The structure was purged of any remaining pirates, and Razanís body was found on the ground. It seemed that his ghost had made his leave. The warriors set sail for Mirith.
In town, Razan was found at the bank. He received a very cold reception from all of the people who had been present at the Dojo. It was then that he gave his explanation:
ìYou all clearly didnít understand what I was planningÖI was hoping to live with the privateers as a spy. I would have sent secret reports back. But I couldnít give out my plan.î
Whether his intentions were pure or not, it didnít matter anymore. He had failed. A round of Red Nateís Rotgut Rum was passed around, and a fine celebration was had. Yo ho ho, a pirateís life was not, as it turned out, for Razan! |

Redundant and rude remark, people who would find your post too long would leave without you telling them to.
Also you over use parentheses, one would have sufficed. |

Dear Jedd,
I am shocked and appalled by the above report. Whether or not his intentions were honorable, his wanton slaughter of two fine clerics and yourself is inexcusable. I am very glad that he is no longer a member of our guild, or we would have to summarily and immediately toss him out on his rump. Attempting to infiltrate the privateers is one thing and might have been useful if that was really what he was doing, but killing people is not an acceptable means to that end.
Please advise as to any actions you think should be taken, and he'd best be looking out for himself if I see him around.

Dear friend,
I am equally disturbed by the news and have been left wondering what the world has come to - I very much regret I was not there to fight at your side but am glad to hear Eliposin could represent the Rebels even though she and the valued friends who joined you were not able to prevent your death and those of dear Sobiya and Taylor.
I guess silly Razan learnt his bitter lesson.
Yours,
Fuoco |

After reading the report and receiving a small note from Jedd explaining peoples' resentment towards Razan, he sat in a small corner of the bank and began to think things through. Though is mind may be small, he knew his priorities and his responsibilities as a fighter. With rum in his blood and his mind in a conflict, he but only followed his instincts. Razan's mind was now racing, he goes over the past events in his head and tries to make sense of his actions...
It was the 85th day of the Growing Moon, Year 438. What was I doing? Oh yes, I was in my usual seat on the bank steps of Mirith. I saw Taylor and Sobiya running into town warning of privateers south of mirith, by the river. I was down to my last bottle of rum. Well, this was my chance to get more rum! I chug the bottle of rum and bring out my storage of hayate's sake. It always makes me feel like more of a fighter. I had not eaten anything for some time and thought I'd be able to enjoy a nice meal after holding the heads of these nuisances high.
Problem #1: Mixed drinks on an empty stomach.
I ran to the forge and hammered the dents from my armor and unsheathed my katana. Being on the the last to arrive, I see Eliposin Taylor and Sobiya already fighting one privateer. I run up and slash at him as best I could, finishing him with a single decapitating slice of the neck. I saw smiles on the faces I was fighting alongside and Eliposin followed the tracks leading us to the next privateer one at a time. I heard someone yell something about a captain. Aha! We landed on an island, as yes. There be a cap'n. With a couple of privateers at his side, he greeted us with a sly grin. Who be ye? I asked and without further ado he replied "I be Cap'n Jass," discreetly eying the clerics, "I be lookin' for new recruits." I know I couldn't see it, but I could feel my eyes lighting up when he said that. Whether it be the rum in me system or me memories from moons ago... but the temptation was too great.
Problem #2: Making decisions while drunk.
"I'll accept your offer, Cap'n Jass," I said at last. I could feel Cap'n Jass's eyes inspect me, "I'll see ye aboard ship then!" he said, "down by Andris way," and with that he sailed off to his ship. I began to follow but was soon left behind...
Problem #3: Never sail alone.
Unclear of where his ship may be, I sailed in the general direction of Andris. Yes, that sounded like the best idea at the time. I sailed across the entire Andris isle, eyes set on the horizon for a ship. With no luck, I found my way headed back to the great city. I stop to ask the guards if they heard anything. I asked them if they had seen anything and one guard replied something about a dojo to the south. I told them I would go "take care of business" and thanked them for their help. Facepalming, why did I think of that!? And yet again, I set sail.
I at last arrived at the dojo, I saw fresh blood in the water and knew the sharks would come swarming in any minute. I quickly made way to the small walk way on the outside of the ship. To the best of my luck, or so I thought, a privateer had come sailing towards me. Yes, he must be taking me to Jass! But no, the private swung his katana at me. Parrying his blows and dealing several critical blows of my own, the privateer retreated into the deeper waters. "Yo ho!" he yelled. "Where be ye Cap'n?" I asked, "where be Cap'n Jass!?" Stubborn scallywag. He remained silent so I went on search for Cap'n Jass myself, sailing around the ship I saw nothing until I found some more fresh blood. I saw Jedd the fighter facing two privateers. Ha! I hope they kill him was going through my mind. I let out a laugh and he finally noticed me, he yelled idiot things to me like, "You don't know what you're doing!"
Ha. I knew exactly what I was doing.
I sailed away in hopes of better luck at spotting Jass. He must not have returned to his ship yet? Aha! I was at the back of the ship now, and I heard voices from inside! At first, it was just some singing... Almost as well as myself. I sang along with them, "Yo ho, a privateer's life for me!" Then, the singing subsided and I heard two higher pitched voices yelling out... That must be the clerics. I listened closer and heard a deep voice. Jass!! I let out a "Yarr!" and then heard Jass call out. Followed shortly by the whiny voices of the clerics. I managed to make out Jass saying, "I'll kill em both!" and I agreed and shouted back, "Do it! I'm here to join you, call off your men so I can enter ye ship!" Finally, Jass made way and lead me onto his ship. At last, what I've always wanted! I explained to him my being here and he taunted me. Said I had to prove my manliness. Fair enough. We engaged in combat. I was surprised by the strength of the Cap'n. Far greater than any privateer in his army and seemed highly skilled in parrying blows. I could not keep up and soon felt the poison of his blade start seeping through my blood. Mixed in with the alcohol it's effects were greater than usual. My vision soon blurred and it was all gray. The Cap'n laughed at my ghost. The fight wasn't even fair. Who would recruit someone stronger than themselves is my question? I believe I had proven myself stronger than many the ranks of his army.
Problem #4: Allowing yourself to fight the Cap'n of whom you wish to join.
After further taunting and hollering, Cap'n Jass soon walked away. Moments later he returned and tossed a giant tin can on the floor beside me. I look over, and could recognize it as Jedd. Ha! Jedd had been captured! Expecting him to bash the brains out of Jedd, I watched, amused. But to my dismay it was only a test, a test of the clerics. He released them and had them heal Jedd during yet another fight. Luckily for me, I convinced the clerics to resurrect me. It made watching the next battle a bit more pleasurably as I begged Jass to allow me to defeat Jedd to prove myself.
After some time of much yelling and fighting, I was slightly confused. It appeared that Jass only seemed interested in the clerics! What was this!? Clerics are weak! Useless! I know Neblin would agree... Surely a fighter would be more useful in his ranks! As the battle dragged on, Jass soon became bored and headed deeper into his ship. Calling his men, more privateers and gapers came to attack us. We pushed them back and cleared a small portion of the ship where we were confronted by Jass again. It seemed his primary focus was fighting me! What!? I tried to call him off, persuade him to recruit me and soon he backed off, but only to get "his best katana." I followed him toward his chest and as he opened it I was filled with greed. I came up behind him and with a powerful blow, I knocked him away from the chest. Unfortunately. the chest was already locked back up as I tried to open it.
Problem #5: Never let greed get the best of ye.
I ran back, and soon the battle heated up. Jass finally accepted the fact that I was there to join him. I felt a sense of pure evil flow through my veins and I took out my glaive of power. Out of instinct, I struck down the clerics first. Apparently this was the wrong thing to do. I felt Jass's katana banging against my plate as I worked my way around the battle. I had to do it! The clerics wouldn't have joined anyway! They would only allow Jedd to succeed in defeating us! The fool that Cap'n be... And so, with the clerics dead and Jass extremely angry I felt a wave of fire flow through the ship. Jass had just been burned to the ground by a ball of fire. Jedd and I both watched in die with shock written all over our faces. So now for the final fight. I began to work my way through the mess of bodies and went hand to hand with Jedd. Soon, 3 fellow privateers joined in pursuit. As his health quickly dropped, I stepped up my attacks as he quaffed potions as fast as he could. Little did I know, he slipped on a magical ring. As I was delivering the final blow to send Jedd into the gray, I felt a sense of heat melt through my armor and burn through my skin, nearly blinding me in the process. I let out a gasp and saw my life flash before my eyes. Now we were all in the gray. "How the devil?"
Problem #6: The unexpected, should be expected.
Jass yelled out, "Men! Get me a cleric!" How they understood him, I wouldn't know. But soon, a weak cleric walked in on us. The cleric wore a very powerful ring, a ring of life! Once Jass was resurrected, he pointed at the clerics. They were too, resurrected. I yelled out to Jass, but he was still angry with what I had done. Ignorance has guided him into bringing back the useless clerics that would only lead to his downfall.
Soon after, I hear more people board the ship. Mustafaa, Pirro, Eliposin, Varto and Dharma came running in. Combining forces with Sobiya and Taylor as well as resurrecting Jedd, they began to attempt to take down Jass. I cried out to be resurrected, but no one seemed to want me fighting for them. Jass, in his arrogant ignorance, tried to take them all on at once. The fool! I knew I could defeat that group by his side.
Disgusted, I ghosted off toward the temple island. Noting the large amounts of sharks in the water. I knew it would not be safe to head back. After arriving at the temple, I felt a sense of good, purity, relief flow through my new body. I no longer felt like a scoundrel so I decided to head toward Mirith to make myself a few steaks to eat. I was starving!
After perhaps an hour at the bank alone, finally everyone returned. It appeared that Jass had escaped to live another day and Jedd was even kind enough to return some items from my corpse. I tried to explain to them, it was all part of my plan! I would have lived as a spy within privateer ranks! But it seemed they didn't believe me. No matter what I did, my actions were wrong. What am I to do...?
Problem #7: Never trust anyone. |

As she watched Razan huddled in the corner of the bank, Shayde shivered with empathy and remembered what had happened.
She walked silently in the shadows behind the bank. She hadn't been anywhere a messenger could find her when the call had gone out, so had missed the show, but she was there when Raz returned, alone.
He hadn't looked hungover, though. He had looked devastated, and something about his demeanor had made her refrain from announcing herself. As he started frantically waving his arms, obviously trying to explain his actions, Shayde stepped quietly forward and was appalled when she saw the cold glares she knew too well, turned on him!
What on earth could have happened? She wanted to run out and take them on to save him the pain of that cold anger, but she couldn't. Raz had his pride, and he was strong. When it came down to it, it didn't matter to her what had happened. She didn't care.
Razan had stuck by her through thick and thin and life and death, since the year...432...wow it was too. Well no matter what happened, he would never, ever, be alone. Not as long as she could still be resurrected.
She stayed in the shadow, but moved over to stand close beside the troubled fighter, one hand on his shoulder, and the other on her dagger. Nobody would touch him. |

101st Day of the Growing Moon, Year 438
Sobiya sat in the Guild Hall mixing potions and was lost deep in thought about that fateful night. The concern and emotions from such prominent and admirable people who were not present at the battle against Captain Jass and his drunken rabble were heartfelt and overwhelming when suddenly a messenger bird swiftly flew through the doors and interrupted her train of thought.
Placing the empty potion bottle back into the chest, she kneeled down to remove the parchment of paper from the birds leg. Unravelling the note she revealed a single sentence.
ìAn Eye for an Eye, Revenge could be such sweet justice!î
ìRevengeî she thought. The very word sent a chill up and down her spine. Tearing the parchment into tiny pieces, she knew word had spread through the lands about Razan, the defected Fighter who took three lives by fighting side by side the very criminals we defend our lands against.
ìRevengeî, she said again, shaking her head. Such a powerful word. In these times, some people think it's weak to practice revenge on those who have done them wrongly. Others think it's a natural right, but if Sobiya's clerical studies had taught her anything it was that there is a lot of greed and betrayal in our lands and it comes from all of us. Although none of us may want to admit it, we're all capable of terrible things under the right circumstances and unfortunately Razan had to experience this first hand.
I may never fully understand what happened that night and even though we sent Captain Jass fleeing for his life, none of us in the original group were winners as we all paid with our lives, including Razan.
Maybe he was trying to infiltrate the Privateers to send back reports, or maybe the enticement of riches he would receive by plundering and pillaging on the high seas was his motive?.
However, whatever his reasoning was behind the decision to briefly join the ranks of the Privateers, Sobiya knew that deep down, Razan was an honourable Fighter. A Fighter she had fought alongside of in many battles and would continue to do so until her intuition proved her wrong.
(OOC, this was one of the best RTQs I have been involved in, and the fact that Razan chose to fight against us made it so much more interesting. Thanks for the GMs involved in this one! Was so much fun) |
