Day 127 of The Bleeding Moon, year 437.
To Captain Fang of the Marali Vanguard.
Dear Captain,
It seems like it was just last night when I was in Lerilin, relaxing and arranging my old bank box, and taking in the familar sights of my old home. Kevin and Crom also popped in and we had an and had an enjoyable chat about the merits of music. He disappeared in a quest for reagents and I stayed at the bank restocking my supply of potions.
Suddenly he rushed back. He had discovered the Lerilin Vanguard guild hall had been attacked, in the same dreadful manner as the Mav the day before. And its gaurds were also gruesomely impaled. Yet before we could act both of us received a summons to Brigobaen.
Brigobaen? Why there? All it had was a library. To attack that village one must truly hate books! As a cleric I was very alarmed to the threat to a repositary of knowledge!
We in turn sent out messages to Rosina and others, and we met and gathered at the bank: Octar, Gorden III, Kevin and Gwyddeon. I sent a message to my neice, Rosina in far Andris. And we knew from the number of messengers on the road that others were gathering in Mirith. Kevin hurried to Brigobaen alone, while the rest of us waited for Rosina at the portal from Andris.
When we arrived at Brigobaen the first thing we were greeted by a bright blodd trail... which lead to the south east forest. Readyinga rms and spells, we crept through the forest and stopped dead in our tracks. Ahead of us was a massive wooden fortress with the narrowest of enterances. Running amok were deadly forest trolls and giants. Blood was everywhere.
I saw Kevin dashing about, chased by giants, as he lured giants from the killing grounds so that the others could focus-fire on ones controlled by the tanks. In the melee I saw Budic and his tusker, Talwin Hawkins, Draeto the tank, Euchra the cleric, Siadar, Galena, Gaelen, Kookai the warrior, Anniqa, Sheldon, Gina, Barbus, Sam, Denary and Serancha. (OCC: I apologize if I omitted your name!)
The battle lasted hours, with endless waves of trolls and giants, particularly the more dangerous Hill Giants. As the tanks forged ahead more trolls spawned behind us, nibbling at the soft underbelly of the healers and casters.
In the end we subdued them. A note was found. It said something about a forge on an island (I didn't see the note first hand.)
We split into two groups. One group with Rosina, Anniqa, Sheldon and Denary went out and searched all the islands around Port Gast. The remainder of the group headed to the Lerilin Vangaurd to deal with the Brigands.
Of course Budric was very distraught and anxious to check on his guards. Several of us hurried into Lerilin to restock potions and repair weapons and armor. By the time we arrived at the LV Guild Hall it was over. Loot was divided at the Lerilin bank, then Budic, Octar, Barabus, Rosina and myself returned to the LV guild Hall to removed the dead guards from their impaling spikes, and bury them with proper funeral rites. (I must say I grow sadly weary of gaining experience in performing funnerals.)
And there is this digression. As we stood at the Lerilin bank, Octar became enraged. He told me he say the smoke signals from Larceine and Cassandra: our MaV guildhall was under attack from brigands! Octar and I rushed ahead to the portal, unknowing if help would be coming or not. We ran through the Marali Forest, gasping for breatj and we headed for our guild hall home. Piles of bodies laid around the south-western wall.
A quick check inside showed our brave guards alert, gripping weapons, and very much alive! We joined the fray as several waves of brigands came from the south and west. At the loud jingling sounds I looked up, and saw all of our friends from Lerilin had joined us! How it swelled my heart! These brigands had not yet had time to overcome our guards and erect a barricade. They were easy to kill in the open.
A quick discussion ensued. We all decided to check on the Andris Vanguard as well. But that did not go well. Groups became separated as some sought to repair and restock first, and others hurried to Andris. Rosina and I became separated from everyone. We could hear the cries of distant battles, but giants and poison beasts separated us from the others and we couldn't get to them to help. Poor Anniqa, Kevin, and Serancha died overwhelmed by briagnds, alone without aid of clerics.
Captain, forgive the length and sprawling nature of this report. I wished to ensure you had full knowledge of the recent attacks on the Vanguards.
I hope to see you soon,
Borti II
Armsman and Chaplain of the MaV
