i'd actually like the idea of food having certain effects on you. Like what Elder Scrolls do, maybe it would be nice if foods restored stamina and/or mana or something. i know that would be overpowered, i'm just thinking something along those lines. Maybe really rare foods can give certain power-ups such as strength. this would really give an incentive to level cooking, although it might be overpowering. i dunno, i'm pretty tired, so if someone else runs with this idea they can nut the balancing act out. |

| Interesting ideas about cooking... in terms of quantity, frequency and duration. Nice. |

| How about make food way overpriced in shops, like 100 or 1000 gold for a delicious steak. Then players would be forced to cook and make their own delicious food, with added effects maybe? |

XD
Well the problem with this is that the current price for food IS expensive for new people who can't cook or fish, at least at the quantity necessary. It was the initial reason I started cooking, I had no monies so instead of training primes and what not I spent days fishing and cooking, and saved the little gp I had for regents. Now I'm not nearly as poor and I could afford to buy all my food, but it's still a waste of money if I can cook it myself and enjoy a friendly bank chat?
So yea from my experience so far people are already a bit forced to start cooking |

Yeah Fishing and Cooking is the way to go! But soon you become rich enough to just buy 100 [insert high priced food here] whenever you need to. It should be more of a reward to fish and cook, other than to save a few hundred gold.
*EDIT* Although, the shinies and memories made while fishing is a reward in itself <4 |

Ahha agreed Many good fishing memories ^_^
Yea I see what you mean though, perhaps if various foods gave different lengths of hunger satisfaction and were priced accordingly so people would want to fish & cook more? Or maybe the shops could ONLY sell lesser fulfilling food? I personally love both skills and would continue to do both whether they were changed or not, but it would be nice to have something more useful come out of them?
If we are considering changing the quantity of hunger satisfaction I think the recipes should be looked at.
For example; 1 trout = 3 fish steaks, while 2 Purple Eggs, 2 Sheep Milk & 1 Mushroom = 1 Serpent Omelet, and yet 1 fish steak gives the same hunger satisfaction of 1 fishy omelet...
Recipes with ingredients that are more difficult to acquire should have more satisfaction. Otherwise there should be some sort of special occurrence when eaten, like Dracilus said. Like restoring mana/stamina. Though the restoration of stam as a result of eating a certain food makes more sense to me. Mana pots are lev 5, so a lev 5 cooking recipe could restore stam?? |

| Maybe. It would be neat if hunger was a number, like hit points. For example, Hunger = x/100. Where each type of food would food would fulfill a certain amount (x) of hunger. So maybe 91-100 = Very full, 81-90 = full, etc... Also, for some of the harder to cook foods like level 10+ maybe raise your hunger to over 100 for a limited time so you stay very full even longer.. Just some ideas.. |

Unorganized thoughts on how to make cooking and fishing useful:
Most of those higher level cooking items are for show, now. I do like the idea of them having effects. But if there were to be effects added to the higher-level cooking items, then I don't think these items should be bought from the store. It gives Cooking a purpose.
And the common Cooking items like Fish Steaks should stay very cheap in the stores for new players. But the harder to make ones shouldn't be in the stores at all. A Sea Serpent Egg Omelette should at least have some benefit. I personally like the stamina restoration. There's no way to restore stamina instantly so far. Using hard to acquire food items would be great for this purpose.
To prevent this being abused, I propose three ideas. 1) The stamina boost should be minimal, otherwise battles would becomes very easy. With enough food on your hands, you could keep eating and using all your advanced specials.
2)Only the recipes with more rare ingredients should have the boost. Although Eel Pie requires Cooking level 6, you could get the ingredients cheap at the shops. Sea Serpent Egg Omelette only requires Level 7, but they are much harder to make because Purple Eggs are relatively much more rare.
Basically, if you can buy all the ingredients at a shop, then the item shouldn't have any boost. Specifically, the only cooking items that I believe should have the stamina boost would be Sea Serpent Egg Omelettes, Chirashizushi (Tuna is rare I think), and Stuffed Giant Heart (2 of the 4 ingredients come from monsters). I wouldn't say Harpie Egg Omelettes should give the boost (or at least not much of a boost) because 2 red eggs aren't that hard to get. Rum Cake, however, requires a lot more Red Eggs so it could have the boost.
I forgot the third idea as I was typing. Darn. Other thoughts: Make ingredients to these recipes considerably rare. I don't buy food often, so I'm not sure what the store sells. But for this stamina boost thing to be more feasible, the shops shouldn't sell the ingredients to the higher level cooking recipes.
Magic-users already have mana potions. Us fighting classes have no way to recover stamina instantly. However, it's only fair that these food items do something for mages. Perhaps some of the recipes could be for stamina, while the others were for magic. However, most of the items should be for stamina, because like I said above, mages have mana potions. For instance, 1 of the 4 recipes I suggested above could be for mages instead of plates. If a plate eats the mage food and vice versa, then it would do nothing aside from fulfilling hunger. |

To eat something you should have to free your hands. IF there was a stamina boost from food then fighters could just hoard ingredients, make a ton of that food, and sit there and spam eating it so GDS never runs out... That would be no fun |

| But if the ideas I said were implemented, getting this food items would be really hard. You'd have to mass murder Sea Serpents, Giants, or Gapers to actually get anywhere. And if it's still too much, make them drop the food items much less frequently! Gapers drop too many stalks as it is >.< |

Not unless you slowly kill them over time and already have quite a large collection of Giant Hearts, Eggs, and Gaper Stalks... And Gapers should drop MORE stalks! Hey, more free fishing poles |

Then...maybe there should only be a possibility that it restores stamina. Like 25% chance. And beyond that, it shouldn't recover much. Let's say that Challening Strike requires 10 stamina points (making up numbers here). We all know how that special barely touches the stamina bar. The amount recovered from food should range from 5-10 stamina points, with it weighted so that it's usually a lower number. So you have a 25% chance of gaining an extremely small amount of stamina.
Plus you have to free your hands, breaking any stance, thus making it worthless to try to eat food to gain enough for a large special. If this was the case, then the only practical use for food would be to quickly gain enough stamina to pull off a quick challenge to save someone's life if you're out of stamina. The point is, if you eat enough of the food to be able to use a big special (say, Booming Blow), then it should take you enough Giant Hearts worth about, say, 20 Giants.
With such a low recovery rate, it wouldn't be too overpowered. I think I may have been to harsh with the numbers, but that sort of thing can be tweaked easily after being tested by the players. If it generally recovers too much, Jinks can lower the rates. |

Yup yup I agree! Why don't sheep drop sheep's milk? It doesn't need to be sold in stores, but then again I don't think eels should be sold in stores either while ash should >.> Fishing above level 4 usually yields around 60% trout and 40% eels, and there's eel poles too, so they are much easier to forage than ash.... I'm sure to get boo'ed for that suggestion >.<
But I don't know about mages having mana boosting food, I think it would take away the need to conserve mana and thus removing part of the challenge and tactical proficiency necessary to over come certain objectives. I prefer the idea of the stam food being exclusive to plates, seeing as mages already have something exclusive i.e. mana pots/meditation. |

Sheep don't drop sheep's milk because it's in a bottle xD If there was a way to milk sheep involving an empty bottle, then sheep's milk shouldn't be sold in stores. I think eels should be kept in stores, as they're mostly bought as a reagent. They may not seem too expensive at first, but when you buy just a small amount of it is equal to the cost of much higher amounts of the other reagents. I have a wizard, I've experienced this >.< If anything, prices should go much higher for eels > And ash should stay out of the stores. Rawr. Make those wizards work!
Well when I was talking about it helping mages, I was just trying to be nice so that I wouldn't get yelled at Plate-exclusive it is! |

Ohhhhoho wait a minute, then explain why gooeys carry bottles!?!? (and why do dragons carry candelabra's? O.o) XP Hehe yea I see your point though, though it could be another nice addition to the Oberin Oddities list ;D yeeeshh poor wizards do have to work! Kudos But yea, I just...love having to explain the process of successes along with acquiring and using reagents (especially ash and glands) to demo/new wizards T.T |
