Just started the game today.
I'm amazed by how friendly and helpful the players are. People gave me items and gold without even asking who I was, or even talking to me for very long. Wow.
I goofed when I made my Ranger. The first time I made the character I know I put a point in the Tracking skill so it would start at level 2. But the server was down, and when I tried a second time (today) I had to remake the character and forgot to put a point in Tracking.
So I've got level 1 tracking. Given that the character has gone from a level 2 to a level 3 ranger, I'd kind of like to keep her.
I wandered around town and the woods areas close to town hitting a function key I'd set to Tracking. I assume that after a few hours of this the skill would level.
Is that the best way to do it? Are there some places that are better to level tracking than others? I mean, I can see a rat or an ant on my sceeen and I don't "sense" it, so it isn't that I am trying this in places with no monsters.
Thanks for any advice,

That is the best way to do it. You won't get a message if you used your tracking successfully, instead you will see dots on your mini-map.
At level 1 this skill is very hard to raise, but keep at it. Oberin is a very hard game, meaning it takes a lot of time and effort to raise levels. So keep that in mind as well. |

| If you see the creatures in the main window, you are too close to track them. Try moving away a bit so they are just outside your vision. And, at lvl 1, you will have best luck with sheep and rats. |

Thank you both. I've got time, here and there. I can see much time spent at the docs in my future... |

Well, after at least half an hour of Tracking with either a sheep or giant rat just off the screen... I'd say the skill works about 1-5% of the time. I do occasionally get a little white dot on my map, so it works sometimes.
Definitely hard to level.
I'm not sure how large my area of "knowlesge" is. I stood on the middle dock, and while I could see three seperate "Giant Rat" names go by on the edges of my vision, I only ever had one white dot on my "radar" (for lack of a better word) at a time. So either it just happened that two rats were never standing in ranger radar at once, or it's just so low level that I can only pick up one creature at a time. Or we have teleporting rats...
It would help to know if the skill levels based on your success rate, or simply how many times you use it. Should I try using the skill in town or in the wilderness if I have not seen a wild sheep or rat? Or does that hurt my success ratio (and therefore a bad thing0?
I really wish all the sheep didn't live down next to the harpies and the ants. Not to mention their habbit of grazing next to the tree that shoots lightning. How are these things still alive? You'd think they'd be electrocuted or ant larvae food by now...

| Take a few steps between succesful tracking attempts and it 'should' count in town. Humans and players can be seen in the minimap as an "H". Also it sometimes doesnt track things that are at the edge of your 'view' it has to be about a few steps further than the edge of your view. |

Thank you all for the good advice.
I did it! I leveled tracking from 1 to 2. I couldn't do it much in town, because all I could track was giant rats and sheep.
Many thanks to Raul who showed me how to fight things, Ronan who made me a raft and showed me how to get to the sheep south of the cemetary, and Percy for assuring me that it could be done. I walked around the beach there with the sheep for about an hour last night while chattign with a friend on the phone, then it happened! I had level 2 Tracking.
I only needed to wander around town for about half an hour to get up to 3!
I'm really glad I didn't need to ditch the character. Thanks again everyone.

Congrats on your tracking levels!
(Off-topic: I call the "radar" a mini-map I played Starcraft a bit too much) |

It's nice to know I'm not the only SC addict. |

Starcraft is the game of horrible nightmares. No, really. My boyfriend insisted on playing it in long marathon all-night sessions, and I had nightmares of aliens killing people. I woke up crying. Very tramatic.
I'll consider the term mini-map, only because it is less anachronistic than radar.

Radar is to detect things. Works for rangers or rogues. Mini-Map for everyone else.
@Eseme: If you have nightmare, then don't watch bf play :p Although you can always tell him to stop playing (or else). :p
As for Blizzard, they are declining from my list. Used to be great, but now... I think it will go up again if they ever release the Starcraft Ghost. But who knows... |

| I, as a rogue rarely use the tracking skill...next to never. Only thing its handy for is to locate players nearby. And on a side note I used to play Starcraft, and moved on to better Sci-Fi RTS, such as Homeworld 2, Command and Conquer Generals, (Only played for a little bit but still fun.) and a few more. I hear the upcoming Supreme Commander game is nice, very, very complicated interface and needs a very, very good graphics card. (Windows only...for now.) |
