While we are on bank courtesy, don't hand people anything without asking first. This means if you have a hundred raw steaks and you see my druid walking around, don't assume I want them. Most of the time I have more than enough... Sorry, this and casting invisible on people are two of my biggest pet peeves about Oberin.

It was an example silly ;d
Other example: Just because I wear a robe it doesn't mean I'm interested in all your enchanting trash you can't get rid of |

A tip for fighters:
I would suggest you work to get to Level 3 woodcrafting and make and repair your own club. It is of course weaker than most weapons, but if you have a cleric in attendanc, say at the Leri cem, you will find you get a lot more experience from it as it requires more hits to bring down a foe. |

Interesting and, while not yet complete, is certainly extensive. Good luck with it.
Personally, I'll be pleased if just one new player reads this thread and stays alive another day without annoying everyone at bank. |
That'd be me Thanks for this lol |

I see new players who seem to need more help than a cast-off hand axe. While many players are extremely helpful (in a direct and practical fashion) to the new, I post in hopes of giving useful advice and address myself to the new player.
* Read this forum before playing. I realize that the chance of your doing so is slim; by the time you read this you may already have died a few times. In any case, please take the time -- quite a lot of time -- to read through forum posts now. There is a wealth of knowledge here that will give you quite an advantage over those who ignore it. Pay no attention to the flaming and wisely balance the sometimes differing opinions. Benefit from others' hard-won experience.
* Do not leave town in your light blue robe and run into the forest. You do not have to go far from town to be killed. A plain robe offers no protection and you are not ready to fight.
* I advise you *not* to call a GM to be named; remain (demo) awhile. You're new; look new. It's best. A GM will show up soon enough -- perhaps a few days after your birth -- and you'll get your name. There's no hurry.
* If you *are* in a hurry, you may not last long around here. This game requires patience.
* In no event should you challenge a GM to a duel or fight. If you're lucky, everyone will laugh at you.
* Spend a little time at the bank. Keep your ears open. You'll learn much. Also, you may receive many gifts. If you don't know what good it is, store it in the bank for now.
* Learn how the game interface works. Read the Player Guide on this site and experiment with the various buttons and windows. I don't mind telling you: Mine for ferrite, give it to me, and let me forge you some armor. I'd rather not try to explain about clicking in the Skills window and clicking the little right-pointing arrow.
* Learn how the modifier keys work. In the Inventory window (and sometimes in Buy, Sell, and Bank) Option-click allows you to choose a quantity while Command-click chooses "all". In the main window (you and your immediate surroundings), Option-click targets a creature for attack. Option-click yourself to target nothing.
* Set up hotkeys (see Player Guide). Mining is tedious; mining without a Mining hotkey is absurd. Set up one hotkey for Cooking, whether you plan to cook or not.
* You cannot quaff a healing potion when your hands are full. Attempting to cook will free your hands so you may quaff. Thus, the Cooking hotkey.
* Get a job. This is not America; there is no employment agency in town and certainly no welfare office. You need to figure out for yourself what you will do to earn a living. Gifts are nice but you need to earn your own gold and buy your own things at shops. Don't be a beggar.
* On the other hand, pick up what you see lying around on the ground, wherever you are, especially bags. If you can't use it, give it to someone who can. Ask around.
* Tip: For quick cash, mine ferrite and sell it to other characters at the forge. Hang around; you may pick up extra gold by taking blacksmith product to be sold.
* Bank Etiquette: If a character leaves something on bank steps, it's left for another, specific character to pick up; leave it. If it's dropped on the ground outside the bank, it's free to any taker.
* Try not to stand on the same horizontal line as another character while talking. Your words will overwrite the other's on screen. Stagger your position, up or down.
* Understand the scale of the game. While others may disagree, I say that Oberin is not about brave fighting -- certainly not for the new player. It is about working. Spend much more time working than trying to fight.
* You must succeed -- at any task -- 100 times before raising your skill in that area from 1 to 2. If your skill level is 1, you will fail quite often at the task. Indeed, you'll fail at level 2, 3, or even 8. From 2 to 3 requires 200 successes; from 3 to 4, 400. It takes quite a long time to work up to the higher levels.
* Patience is demanded. When mining, for example, don't try to mine again until you see the results of your last attempt. The game plays rather slowly.
* When you're given a Robe of Protection or suit of Plate Armor, you are not invincible. Please do not rush into the forest and get killed. Consider the armor sufficient to protect you while you try for logs just outside town gate. Run when you see a monster; run *into* town, not away.
* Do not allow yourself to grow hungry for any reason. You will not starve to death but you won't gain experience for your successes.
* Don't leave town with unneccesary valuables. Store them in bank.
* Get an AIM account before you leave town. Ask for the AIM accounts of characters you trust and add them to your Buddy List.
* When invited on a hunt, beware. You may be partied with far more able characters. They will go where you should not. A good place for you is in the back of the crowd. Town might be better. Pay attention to suggestions.
* Make friends; you'll need them. If you're a Ranger on a party, Track -- and tell what you see. If you're a Cleric, Heal and use your Magery to keep your fellows alive. If you're a Druid, distribute Night Vision freely. Don't wait to be asked.
* Don't be greedy. Chances are, if it's dead, somebody else killed it, even if you hit it a couple times. Let them loot. You'll get yours in the end.
* If you die, *think* first. Did you have anything valuable in your pack? Chances are, if you're new, you didn't, even if you think you did. Just walk away. Take your ghost back to town and visit the Temple. You'll be ressurected there and it costs nothing. Go back to bank, re-equip, and go forth.
* If you die holding something of certain value, don't do anything at all. Stand right there, on your body. Don't move. Beware that no matter what you say, you cannot be understood by most characters -- and if the battle still rages, nobody should be distracted by your wailing. Be patient. You're already dead; you can't be hurt. It may take an hour but someone will come by to ressurect you on the spot. Grab your gear and go.
* Realize that on-the-spot Cleric ressurection is expensive. It requires the use of a Dragon's Tooth, not easy to come by. Thank your rescuer and think about ways to repay or at least show your gratitude.
* Different classes have vastly different abilities and needs. Learn yours. If you're still new, you may well want to delete your current character and start in another class more suited to your own personal temperament. Think about it.
* Once you've settled on a class, seek out others of the same class and learn from them. Unless I've played your class, I can't give you much more advice on it than I have already, in this post.
* Have fun! |

| I don't think so. He probably went to post this at the last page so new players could see without going through all the pages but he double posted instead. |

| That would seem valid..... except, when you view a topic, you see the first page first (unless you click the view unread button). |

| hehe, I once died like that. I was at marali and i thought i was taking the road to mirith, when i was surrounded by brackens, and trolls, and AEs, and spiders... It was the day i found out marlick really is insane when he goes solo to rescue someone(in an awesome way). |

Actually they should be asked or ask others, some of us like the dark!
Night vision for a group is fine if you're out hunting, but when you're in town and relaxing and just chatting away while watching it get darker , it gets annoying when a druid feels the need to NV EVERYONE and EVERYTHING at bank, including pets without asking if people want NV.
It's really annoying having a useless spell cast on you for just for that druid's gain.
And some even have the nerve to ask for volcanic ash after they NV you without your consent. |
note: do candles when its dark, its beautiful |

To fish, you need a fishing pole and to be standing on or at the edge of a body of water. Open your skills window (Command + K or select from the 'View' menu) and click on fishing.
Alternatively, you could assign it to one of your fkeys by typing: /f2/fishing. Then you could push f2 to fish. Other skills can be used the same way. |

Thank you for the advice, this is my fourth day as an Oberin Citizen, I'm a first time Druid, so any advice is always good, especially when in a roll-playing environment. I would advice folks to heed Changnian's advice, and make some friends, remember to be courteous, folks respond well to thank yous, and kindness. I look forward to reading more posts. Enjoy, and hope to see you: no IM yet, please feel free to add me: Joselynn. |
